A 41-year-old man with an outstanding felony warrant was confronted and killed on Sunday afternoon by La Mesa Police.
San Diego Police Lt. Steve Shebloski said the shooting occurred around 4:15 p.m. in a parking lot at 8000 University Avenue.
At some point during the confrontation, the man displayed a handgun, and officers opened fire, Shebloski said.
The wanted felon was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
A passing car was also hit by a round, but no one in it was injured, Shebloski said.
The San Diego Police homicide unit will be responsible for investigating the officer-involved shooting.
