A 3-year-old boy with access to an unsecured handgun accidentally shot and killed his 1-year-old sister Monday at their Fallbrook home.

San Diego Sheriff‘s deputies were dispatched at 7:30 a.m. to a residence in the 1100 block of South Stagecoach Lane.

Deputies confirmed that the boy had gotten hold of an unsecured handgun and fired the shot, hitting his sister in her head.

Paramedics arrived on scene and transported the girl to Palomar Medical Center. Despite lifesaving efforts, she was pronounced dead at 8:30 a.m.

“The Sheriff’s Department extends our sympathies to the family and those affected by this death,” the department said in a statement. “Homicide investigators are working to gather more information to determine the circumstances of the death.”

The department said the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office had been notified of the incident.
