The Chula Vista Police Department arrested two motorists and issued 35 citations during a weekend DUI/Driver’s license checkpoint.

Nearly 2,300 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, in the 200 block of East Orange Avenue, from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Officers screened 688 vehicles and conducted field sobriety tests on nine drivers. They arrested two on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Of the 35 tickets, officers wrote 24 for unlicensed drivers or suspended licenses.
They impounded six vehicles.

Police determine DUI checkpoint locations based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads.
