A quarrel between a mother and daughter at their home on the grounds of Campo Indian Reservation escalated Friday into a shooting that left the younger woman wounded and the elder one under arrest.
The victim walked into a tribal fire station in the 36000 block of Church Road shortly before 10 a.m. and reported that she had been shot at her nearby residence, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
Medics took her to Golden Acorn Casino in Campo, where they met an air ambulance for a flight to a hospital for treatment of an apparently non-life-threatening gunshot wound, sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Ford said.
Deputies, meanwhile, went to the Church Road home where the shooting had occurred, finding the victim’s mother, 42-year-old Andrea Najera, gone. When sheriff’s personnel returned later in the day, however, they found Najera there and took her into custody without incident.
Detectives have determined that the two women were arguing when Najera allegedly retrieved a shotgun, Ford said.
“The victim attempted to take it from her,” the lieutenant said. “As they struggled over the weapon, the gun went off and the victim was struck in the abdomen.”
Najera was booked into Las Colinas women’s jail in Santee on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
