A man standing outside his Chevrolet in the center divider on eastbound State Route 78 near Vista died Sunday when a Buick Verrano struck him, the California Highway Patrol said.
The collision happened around 10:20 a.m. Sunday. The man died at the scene.
The CHP identified the Buick driver as Isabella Herrera, 22, of Oceanside. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment of moderate, but non-life-threatening injuries.
CHP officers arrested Herrera at 12:22 p.m. She faces multiple charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter and felony driving under the influence (DUI).
Someone called CHP dispatchers and could not provide any vehicle description, but said the situation was “dire, they needed help, and disconnected,” the CHP log said. A medical examiner was called to the scene at 10:29 a.m.
Traffic in the area of the crash was affected until approximately 1:30 p.m.
The investigation is ongoing, and the CHP is asking anyone who may have information or may have witnessed the incident to contact the patrol’s Oceanside Area office at (760) 643-3400.
