A 33-year-old man was behind bars Tuesday on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol when the pickup truck he was driving crashed into a minivan at a Midway-area intersection, killing a young man and a senior woman and leaving two other people seriously injured.

Edgar Jesus Suarez of San Diego allegedly lost control of his Toyota Tacoma while speeding to the west on Sports Arena Boulevard shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday, according to police.

At Rosecrans Street, the pickup struck a raised median and became airborne, landing on top of a 2015 Toyota Sienna that was stopped for a red light in a northbound lane, Sgt. Victoria Houseman said.

The impact fatally injured two backseat passengers in the van, Ahmed Alrawi, 23, and 81-year-old Suad Alsamarai. The victims, both residents of El Cajon, died at the scene of the crash.

The 21-year-old man who had been driving the van and a 46-year-old female front-seat passenger were hospitalized for treatment of serious injuries, as was Suarez.

Upon his release from medical care on Monday, Suarez was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI and driving without a license. He was being held on $250,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
