A California Highway Patrol officer was shot in the thigh early Wednesday evening during a dispute with a 25-year-old suspect on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley.
The officer responded to eastbound side of the freeway near the I-805 interchange about 6:15 p.m. to investigate reports of a traffic collision, according to the San Diego Police Department.
During the investigation, the officer became involved in a struggle with the suspect, who allegedly produced a gun and fired a single shot at the officer. Details on what led up to the altercation were not immediately available.
The officer was struck in the thigh and later taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital in serious but stable condition.
The suspect was taken into custody within minutes of the shooting, SDPD Officer Darius Jamsetjee said. The CHP officer’s name was not immediately released.
An SDPD investigation into the shooting was ongoing.
