A man being pursued by the Border Patrol died Saturday in El Cajon when he lost control of his car on Interstate 8.
It’s unclear where or why Border Patrol agents began chasing the vehicle, according to OnScene.TV, but the pursuit reached the westbound lanes of I-8.
The authorities lost sight of the vehicle at the 2nd Street exit. Investigators believe the driver had taken the right shoulder at high speed, while attempting to pass traffic, but lost control and went off the roadway.
The car continued down the embankment and hit a tree, crushing it. The driver died upon impact.
The California Highway Patrol is handling the accident investigation.
