Authorities Friday publicly identified a 22-year-old semi-pro football player who died in a traffic crash while trying to change a flat tire alongside a South Bay freeway.
Dave Post of San Diego was working to fix his car in a median on the eastbound side of state Route 54 near Highland Avenue in National City when a vehicle rammed into it shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The impact caused Post’s vehicle to slam into him, hurling him into the roadway, the agency reported.
Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Post was a member of the San Diego Silverbacks of the semi-professional LaBelle Developmental Football League, the team stated Friday on its website.
“As a football team, family, and community, we mourn the tragic loss of life of our dear nephew, brother, and teammate,” the team said in the posted statement. Â “Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Dave.”
