The agents were on patrol when gunshots rang out at about 2 p.m., according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection public affairs. It was unclear if the agents had been targeted by the gunfire, and no known injuries resulted, officials said.

CBP investigators went to the rural area to investigate and search for the unidentified shooter or shooters, with help from the FBI, San Diego Police Department and San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

No arrests had been made or suspects publicly identified as of late afternoon.
