A utility line near Interstate 5 in Old Town caught fire just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, halting trolley service and closing freeway ramps in the area.

The California Highway Patrol reported a utility pole “broken and hanging” on Taylor Street near the freeway.

Power was restored to most electric customers in the area by 8:15 p.m., but Metropolitan Transit System was forced to use buses to take passengers around the Old Town Transit Center.

About 295 San Diego Gas & Electric customers in the Lindbergh Field, Ocean Beach, Golden Hill, Center City, Balboa Park and Midway areas lost power as San Diego Fire-Rescue crews doused the burning utility line.

SDG&E requested that all trains avoid dropping off and picking up passengers in the area while the line was repaired.

North County Transit District reported delays for some Coaster trains on Wednesday morning.
