San Diego Police announced Thursday they have impounded vehicles involved in a series of illegal street races and intersection takeovers in Mission Valley and University City on Christmas night.

Police received numerous 911 calls on the evening of Dec. 25 regarding street racing, stunt driving, and intersection takeovers in the two neighborhoods.

After obtaining court orders, officers found and impounded 13 of the vehicles involved. The racers be stored for 30 days and their owners required to pay fees ranging from $1,800 to $2,000.

“As drivers of these vehicles are identified and arrested, they face potential imprisonment for 90 days, fines of $1,000, 40 days of community service, and a 6-month license suspension,” the department said in a statement.

Police warned they will “continue to investigate illegal street racing, stunt driving, and intersection takeovers” amid a nationwide increase in such activity.
