Homicide detectives sought Thursday to identify and track down whoever is responsible for a late-night fatal shooting in a Colina Del Sol-area commercial district.

Patrol officers responding to reports of gunfire found a 29-year-old man mortally wounded in a parking lot in the 5000 block of El Cajon Boulevard shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The victim, whose name was withheld pending family notification, died at the scene, SDPD Lt. Andra Brown said.

Investigators have determined that the victim was inside or standing next to his parked car when a thin man wearing a gray hooded jacket and some sort of facial covering approached.

“Words were exchanged between them,” Brown said. “The (assailant) produced a handgun and fired multiple times at the victim.”

The shooter then fled to the west on foot.

The motive for the slaying is unknown, according to police.
