A man is in custody and suspected of starting a fire at a City Heights apartment complex early Monday that left one person injured.

At around 2 a.m., firefighters responded to flames coming from an apartment at a complex at 4095 Highland Ave.

One person was transported to UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest and eight residents were displaced.

An unidentified man was taken into custody after he reportedly told San Diego Police officers that he had started the fire, a watch commander confirmed. The man may have been suffering a mental health crisis.

Several crews responded, including at least 50 emergency personnel. No other information was immediately released.
