A pedestrian was struck and killed as he ran across a major street in the Clairemont Mesa neighborhood of San Diego on Thursday evening.

A 28-year-old woman was driving a 2017 Nissan Sentra eastbound at 7:12 p.m. in the 5400 block of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard when the man ran out in front of the car from the center island and was struck, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.

The pedestrian, who was described as a 54-year-old man, was taken to a hospital where he later died.

The police department’s traffic division is investigating the collision and anyone with information was asked to call the division at 858-495-7800 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
