A man died Saturday when he stepped out of an SUV on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley and at least one vehicle hit him.
The California Highway Patrol received reports of the incident, in the westbound lanes at Texas Street and Qualcomm Way, at 7:13 p.m.
A witness told the CHP the blue SUV was pulled over on the right shoulder before the man exited and was struck.
Officers found a box of wine and other debris in the freeway lanes, the CHP said.
There was no indication if any drivers pulled over to aid in the investigation. OnScene TV reported that traffic had backed up for several miles after the incident.
