A Mustang driver taking part in an illegal street race in Otay Mesa lost control of his customized racecar, hitting and killing a male spectator, police said Sunday.

Two motorists were drag racing at about 6 a.m. Sunday in the 8900 block of Kerns Street when the Mustang went up on the sidewalk, striking a bystander who was watching the race, said Officer Sarah Foster of the San Diego Police Department.

The bystander died of his injuries at the scene, the officer said.

No arrests were immediately reported, and police said alcohol was not involvedin the crash.

The stretch of Kerns Street near the border is frequently the scene of illegal street races.

All of the cars involved in the Sunday morning incident were customized with racing slicks for tires and nitrous oxide tanks for high performance.
