A male pedestrian was struck and killed Friday night while standing in the fast lane of Interstate 5 in National City.
The crash was reported at 8:45 p.m. on the northbound freeway near the Mile of Cars exit.
California Highway Patrol officers diverted traffic off the freeway while the crash was investigated.
A witness told the CHP the pedestrian was standing in the fast lane when the vehicle hit him.
The driver, whose car was heavily damaged, pulled over after the collision.
