San Diego police impounded a souped-up Ford Mustang and a truck and trailer Sunday in an area near the border known for street racing.
Officers responded to the 8800 block of Kerns Street in Otay Mesa Sunday morning after receiving notice of a one-vehicle crash, OnScene.TV reported.
A car had busted a fire hydrant, causing a 60-foot eruption of water, and two water lines. It also hit a street sign, tree and electrical junction box.
The car could not be found, according to OnScene, but a witness told police he’d seen a Mustang moving at speeds he estimated at 120 mph before the accident. The witness directed officers south to La Media Road, where he said the Mustang driver had fled.
When police arrived on La Media, several more people fled the scene, but officers found the abandoned truck, trailer and wrecked Mustang with the keys in the ignition.
The Mustang, OnScene said, was modified for illegal racing, including racing slick tires and nitrous oxide to boost the engine’s power.
No injuries were reported.
Police said the truck is registered to a Sacramento address.
