A skateboarder was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after colliding with a vehicle on Nimitz Boulevard in Ocean Beach, police said Tuesday.

A 27-year-old man riding a skateboard was hit by a car forcing the closure of Nimitz Boulevard between West Point Loma and Sunset Cliffs boulevards at around 6 a.m., according to San Diego Police .

Police said a 63-year-old man was driving southbound on Nimitz Boulevard, approaching a green light at the intersection of Nimitz and West Point Loma Boulevard. The skateboard rider was heading northbound on Nimitz, when he entered the intersection and turned westbound against a red light in front of the driver, and was struck, police said.

The man hit the windshield of the Subaru sedan and was thrown to the ground.

Bystanders rushed to aid the victim, who was transported to UC San Diego Medical Center.

The driver of the sedan remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
