Chain-reaction crashes involving three vehicles left a woman dead on Interstate 15 in Sabre Springs Thursday, while a suspected hit-and-run driver suffered serious injuries.
The pileup occurred shortly before 2 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
A man, 30, lost control of a Ford pickup on the northbound side of the freeway near state Route 56, and collided with a Toyota sedan.
When the truck skidded to a halt in the roadway, a Kia sedan struck it, CHP public-affairs Officer Sal Castro said.
At that point, the pickup’s driver jumped out of his damaged vehicle and ran.
Paramedics took the driver of the Toyota, a 55-year-old Chula Vista resident, to a trauma center, where doctors pronounced her dead.
The Desert Hot Springs man driving the Kia was transported to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
San Diego police eventually found the man who abandoned the pickup lying unconscious in a nearby neighborhood, according to the CHP. He suffered severe injuries, Castro said.
Authorities did not release the names of the suspected hit-and-run driver or the other motorists involved in the crashes.
