One boy died and another was injured in a shooting at an apartment complex, police said Wednesday.

Officers responded to multiple 911 calls at around 8 p.m. Tuesday to find a 16-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body in the parking lot of the Bay Terraces apartments at 300 S. Meadowbrook Drive.

While first responders were at the scene, another boy, 14, emerged with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Officer Adam Sharki of the San Diego Police Department. Paramedics arrived and took both teens to a local hospital. The first victim was pronounced dead at 8:41 p.m., and the second was expected to recover, Sharki said.

Detectives have not yet identified a suspect. However, according to Sharki, they learned that a group of young boys were playing basketball in the complex courtyard “when neighbors reported hearing gunfire.”

At some point the group scattered, and the 16-year-old was brought to the parking lot where officers found him.

No further information was released, and SDPD detectives were investigating the incident.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting was asked to call the SDPD Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
