A South Bay man was arrested Thursday for allegedly firing a rifle at an occupied car near his home in a seemingly random attack, damaging the vehicle but causing no injuries.

Gabriel Segura, 45, was taken into custody without incident at his residence in the 3000 block of East 18th Street in National City shortly after 11:30 a.m., according to police.

The victim had just dropped off a friend in the neighborhood east of Interstate 805 and north of state Route 54 when Segura allegedly approached on foot and opened fire for unknown reasons about 3 a.m. Wednesday.

“The rear window and bumper were struck,” NCPD Sgt. Kenneth Springer said. “The (motorist) was able to drive away and was not injured by the gunfire.”

Based on witness interviews, detectives identified Segura, who lives a short distance from the site of the shooting, as the alleged gunman.

The motive for the crime was unclear. There was no immediate indication that Segura and the victim knew each other, the sergeant said.
