A 25-year-old man was shot and killed at a Linda Vista apartment complex in an apparent “gang challenge,” police reported Wednesday.

The shooting occurred about 9:25 p.m. Tuesday at Village Apartments on Eastman Street between Fulton and Ulric streets, San Diego Police Lt. Andra Brown said.

Officers responded to the scene and found the victim in the patio area of an apartment suffering from at least one gunshot to his upper body, Brown said.

The victim, whose name was withheld pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told investigators two or three men approached the victim and his companions, then “issued a gang challenge,” the lieutenant said. One of the suspects then pulled out a handgun and opened fire.

The suspects fled the area in a dark four-door sedan and a dark SUV. Detailed descriptions of the suspects were not immediately available.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call SDPD’s Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
