Homicide detectives are investigating a weekend shooting near Sunset Cliffs Natural Park that left a 33-year-old man dead.

Several 911 callers reported hearing gunfire and a person yelling for help in the vicinity of the coastal open-space preserve south of Ocean Beach shortly before 11:30 p.m. Sunday, according to San Diego police.

Patrol officers found the victim off the 4500 block of Ladera Street, suffering from apparent bullet wounds, Sgt. Joel Tienat said. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending family notification.

“It is still early in the investigation, and little is known about the circumstances leading to the (victim’s) death,” Tienat said Monday morning. “Detectives are collecting evidence and attempting to locate witnesses.”
