Crews extinguished a small brush fire Sunday in a riverbed near state Route 76, the North County Fire Protection District said.

At 2:35 p.m., the district said firefighters stopped the forward rate of spread in Bonsall. Crews will remain on scene, on the eastbound side of the route near South Mission Road, to perform mop-up.

The riverbed contained heavy fuel and crews with chainsaws and other equipment planned to thin out the vegetation for the next hour, according to district Capt. John Choi. He said the fire was difficult to get to because of so much brush.

Crews from the North County Fire Department, the Vista Fire Department and Cal Fire San Diego assisted in the effort, Choi said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, he added.
