A 23-year-old man was killed in a series of collisions on Interstate 5 south of Tamarack Avenue in Carlsbad early Sunday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The first occurred at 4:46 a.m. when the victim’s northbound 2008 Hyundai Elantra veered into the center divider and spun out. The driver either left his car or was ejected.

After the initial collision, a 2015 Volkswagen Passat and 2018 Honda Accord struck both the Hyundai and the victim.

CHP and Carlsbad Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and pronounced the Hyundai driver dead.

The drivers of the Volkswagen and Honda suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Multiple lanes were closed until 11 a.m. The incident remains under investigation and the CHP urged anyone with information to call (760) 643-3400.
