The Chula Vista Police Department plans saturation patrols from 5 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday targeting St. Patrick’s Day revelers who drink or smoke marijuana and then drive.
“If drinking is part of your plans, plan on designating a sober driver and find a safe way home,” said Officer Oscar Miranda said. “Don’t make poor choices and allow yourself to mix alcohol or drugs with driving.”
On the last St. Patrick’s Day before the pandemic, seven people were killed across California, and 116 others were injured, in crashes caused by driving under the influence.
Police noted that California’s public health guidance advises against mixing with people you don’t live with to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Although many St. Patrick’s Day celebrations will be held virtually this year, the department said it’s important to designate a sober driver or stay at home for the night.
