Detectives sought Friday to determine who fatally shot a 17-year-old boy at an Eastlake-area park.

Patrol officers responding to reports of gunfire in a neighborhood just east of state Route 125 in Chula Vista shortly before 7:30 p.m. Thursday found the youth lying in a parking lot at Sunset View Park on South Greensview Drive, suffering from gunshot wounds, according to police.

Paramedics took the teenager to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was withheld pending family notification.

Witnesses told investigators the victim was with friends at the park when he got into an argument with a group of unidentified teenage boys or young men, one of whom shot him before fleeing with his companions in a dark-colored four-door Acura or Honda sedan, Lt. Dan Peak said.

Police believe the victim may have been acquainted with the group that the shooter was in. It was unclear, however, what prompted the deadly gunfire.

“The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and it is very early in the investigation,” the lieutenant said late Friday morning.

There was no immediate evidence that the slaying was related to a shooting that left a 15-year-old boy wounded at the same park last weekend, according to Peak.
