A rider died Saturday when his Harley Davidson Road Glide went off westbound state Route 76 in unincorporated Valley Center and crashed into a tree.

The accident happened at 3:32 p.m. According to the California Highway Patrol, the motorcyclist veered to the left, ran off the roadway, and collided with a tree.

When a CHP officer arrived on scene, the rider was described as suffering from major trauma, according to an agency incident log.

An airship was called in, but at about 4:10 p.m., the motorcyclist, a 66-year-old male from Mission Viejo, was pronounced dead.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office was summoned to the scene, the CHP log said.

The La Jolla Fire Department, Rincon Fire Department, Pala Fire Department and La Jolla Tribal Police Department also responded to the scene.
