Coroner’s officials Thursday publicly identified an 86-year-old man who was struck by an SUV as he was crossing a Chula Vista roadway in a mobility scooter.

The eastbound Hyundai Santa Fe hit Byungsun Han of Chula Vista at Oxford Street and Oxford Court shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

Paramedics took Han to UCSD Medical Center in San Diego, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigations into exactly how the fatal accident occurred and who was at fault were ongoing Thursday afternoon and could take weeks to complete, said Chula Vista police traffic-division Officer Michael Knapp.

Complicating those efforts were conflicting witness accounts about whether Han was within or outside of what is legally considered an unmarked crosswalk at the “T” intersection, according to Knapp.

Though the issue of who had the right of way was murky, there were no immediate indications that the Chula Vista man behind the wheel of the SUV was violating any traffic laws at the time of the crash, the officer said.
