Authorities Saturday were investigating the fatal shooting of a man by a security guard at a Ralphs supermarket in downtown San Diego.

Police were called to 100 G Street just before 9:30 p.m. Friday, where they found an unresponsive male with an apparent gunshot injury on the sidewalk in front of the market.

Officers performed life-saving measures until relieved by San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel. The victim was taken to a hospital where he died, police said.

According to investigators with the San Diego County Police Department’s Homicide Unit, the man was involved in an altercation with a security guard inside the store in which the guard was injured and fired his handgun at the man.

The guard was detained at the scene, and detectives were still collecting evidence and speaking with witnesses Saturday.

The deceased man has not been identified, but was described as a thin black male in his 50s.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the SDPD’s Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
