A 20-year-old man suspected of stabbing his wife, then running into an Oceanside apartment where he was arrested following an hours- long standoff with police, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence charges.

Vixiano Chestertal is accused of stabbing the 20-year-old victim on Jan. 18, according to the Oceanside Police Department. Dispatchers received reports around 5:30 p.m. that day that the victim was seen with stab wounds to her neck and arm, according to Oceanside police spokesman Tom Bussey.

Officers responded to an apartment complex at 312 Rancho Del Oro, where they found the victim being treated by neighbors, Bussey said. She was airlifted to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

Witnesses told police that Chestertal was seen running into an apartment, prompting police to establish a perimeter around the unit, Bussey said.

Officers saw the suspect was holding a knife while inside the apartment, Bussey said.

A SWAT team and crisis negotiators were called to the scene after nearly two hours of attempting to convince the suspect to surrender, he said.

About 1 in the morning, SWAT officers entered the apartment and deployed a police dog along with “several less than lethal munitions” to take the suspect into custody, Bussey said. Chestertal suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

He remains in custody without bail pending his next court date, a Feb. 18 readiness conference.
