A driver remained hospitalized Tuesday with serious injuries he suffered when he crashed a Chevrolet Corvette near an Escondido intersection, killing his passenger, police said.
The crash happened on El Norte Parkway, west of Fig Street, about 7:50 p.m. Monday, Escondido police Lt. Scott Walters said.
Witnesses told officers the 29-year-old driver was speeding westbound on El Norte Parkway and lost control of the sports car, which crashed into a hydrant and a tree, Walters said.
The driver and passenger were both taken to Palomar Medical Center, where the 42-year-old man was later pronounced dead. The driver’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, according to police.
The names of both men were not immediately available.
It was unknown whether alcohol or drugs were a factor, according to police, who asked anyone who witnessed the crash to call Escondido police Officer Frank Huston at 760-839-4423.
