A woman suffered life-threatening injuries and a man suffered less severe injuries Monday night when they were both struck by a car while crossing a Chollas View intersection.

Four people were crossing 47th Street at Hartley Street around 7:50 p.m. in a crosswalk that had flashing yellow crossing lights, according to San Diego police.

A 54-year-old man behind the wheel of a Cadillac sedan was heading northbound on 47th Street and failed to stop for the blinking yellow lights before striking two of the four pedestrians, San Diego Police Officer John Buttle said.

Paramedics took both victims to a hospital.

A 34-year-old woman sustained life-threatening injuries — including a broken pelvis — and a 36-year-old man suffered a broken leg and other injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Buttle said.

NBC7 reported that the victims were husband and wife, and had been crossing the street with their teenage children.

The driver remained at the scene, Buttle said, adding that intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the crash.
