A third person has died from injuries suffered in a pre-dawn weekend house fire in Logan Heights, authorities reported Wednesday.
A man died at the scene of the blaze, four blocks west of state Route 15, which erupted for unknown reasons shortly before 4:30 a.m. Sunday and a woman succumbed to her injuries in a hospital, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
Authorities have not released the victims’ names, but a GoFundMe.com account set up to help their relatives with funeral expenses identified them as Nico Mayo and her husband, Jose A. Romero.
A third member of the family, a 21-year-old woman identified only as Iris, died at a hospital Tuesday, according to the donation website.
The couple’s three other children were also taken to a hospital with injuries they suffered in the fire.
The oldest son, 27, has been released from the hospital, but their youngest son, 17, and oldest daughter, 24, remained hospitalized as of Tuesday night, NBC7 reported.
Firefighters responding to the blaze in the 3100 block of Clay Avenue arrived to find the family’s home engulfed in flames with residents trapped inside.
“Due to the intense fire conditions, it took a little while for us to get it knocked down and get in there and get those victims out,” SDFRD Battalion Chief Steve Salaz told reporters at the scene.
