A motorcyclist died Saturday in a crash involving an SUV in a popular recreational vehicle park in the desert, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The fatal crash occurred near the Devil’s Slide area of the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area, off Highway 78, according to a CHP incident report, and happened around 3:15 p.m., according to Cal Fire San Diego.

The other vehicle was a Ford Explorer, FOX5 reported. The station said the man in his 40s died before a medical airlift could transport him to a hospital. His name was withheld pending family notification.

It was unclear if he was driving a street-legal motorcycle or a dirt bike. Devil’s Slide is a popular desert destination with off-road vehicle enthusiasts. It’s a 200-foot-high granite-and-sand site named for the challenge it presents to off-roaders.

There were no reports of any other injuries and t was unclear if the driver of the other vehicle was cited.

The cause of the crash was being investigated.
