San Diego police took a suspect into custody Sunday in connection with a series of brush fires set in the Otay Valley Regional Park this weekend.

As many as 10 brush fires had been started since Friday near a homeless encampment in the 240 block of Beyer Way, according to Sgt. Robert Hawkins of the San Diego Police Department.

A man matching the description of the alleged arsonist given by witnesses was taken into custody after being spotted by a helicopter.

Officer Robert Heims identified the suspect as Ramon Guevara, 49. He’s being held on suspicion of arson.

There were five fires on Sunday covering an estimated 3 acres. Units from the Chula Vista and San Diego fire departments and one firefighting helicopter joined to battle the flames. Bulldozers also were being brought in.

Traffic on Beyer Way was closed in both directions.
