If you’re superstitious, it’s probably best not to drink and drive on Friday the 13th, as the San Diego Police Department is planning a checkpoint.

Officers will set up the checkpoint somewhere in the city limits beginning at 11 p.m. Friday and continuing until 3 a.m. Saturday to check drivers for alcohol and marijuana impairment.

The checkpoints are regularly announced in advance as a deterrent to drivers who may drink or smoke to excess and then get behind the wheel.

“Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized proactive DUI operations are conducted routinely,” the department said.

The checkpoint location will be chosen based on the frequency of previous accidents and arrests in the vicinity.
