A vehicle struck a postal worker Thursday afternoon on a South Bay roadside, pinning him against his parked mail truck, police said.

The accident, in the 2900 block of Highland Avenue in National City, occurred about 1 p.m. It left the worker badly injured, according to police.

An older driver possibly suffered a stroke or other medical emergency and lost control of his car. That sent it crashing into the back of the Postal Service vehicle, police said.

The mailman’s legs wound up crushed against his truck. Witnesses accessed the other vehicle, put its transmission into reverse and backed it off of him.

The first police officer on scene applied a tourniquet to one of the victim’s legs, “which helped stop the bleeding and saved his life, probably,” Sgt. Damian Ballardo told OnScene TV.

Medics took the postman to UCSD Medical Center in San Diego along with the motorist, Ballardo said. Neither man’s name was released.
