Authorities Wednesday publicly identified a 64-year-old Oceanside man who was killed in a crash on state Route 76 in Vista on Labor Day.

William Lee Vinyard Jr. was behind the wheel of a Nissan Sentra heading westbound on SR-76 when he attempted to make a left turn onto southbound East Vista Way around 3:35 a.m. Monday, against a red light, according to information from the California Highway Patrol and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

A 36-year-old Temecula man heading eastbound on SR-76 in a Jeep Wrangler then struck the side of the Nissan, which had turned directly into his path, the CHP said.

Vinyard was pronounced dead at the scene, while the Jeep driver complained of pain but was not seriously injured.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.
