A big rig carrying a mobile crane struck another large truck parked on the right shoulder of Interstate 5 in Oceanside Tuesday, causing a fire and closing two lanes of the highway.
The crash caused the big rig to veer off the highway, hit a tree and catch fire, but neither driver was seriously hurt, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The collision occurred about 10:40 a.m. on southbound I-5, just north of Harbor Drive, according to CHP Officer Mark Latulippe, who said the fire was extinguished by “good Samaritans.”
The drivers of both vehicles suffered minor injuries, he said.
A SigAlert was issued and two of four southbound lanes were closed, clogging traffic in the area.
“We’re dealing with a lot of weight,” Latulippe said early Tuesday afternoon, adding that he expects crews to be out there for “a while.”
