San Diego Police responding to a domestic dispute in the El Cerrito neighborhood shot and killed a man after he swung a shovel at them.

Dispatchers received a call just before 8 a.m. from a 70-year-old woman who said her 52-year-old nephew had thrown a brick at her in a home in the 5800 block of Adelaide Avenue.

Witnesses said the man advanced on the officers with a shovel. He was told to stop, but continue to advance. One officer fired a Taser, but the suspect did not stop, prompting the the other officer to fire his handgun.

Officers performed CPR on the suspect, but he died at the scene.

The suspect has been identified, but his name is being withheld at this time pending further family notifications.

Police asked anyone with information regarding the incident to call the department’s homicide unit at 619-531-2293.
