A security officer at Old Town Transit Center stabbed a large man who attacked him Friday, officials said.
The assailant, who had tried to steal the man’s gun, escaped. Police arrested him following a search of the area.
The would-be thief approached the security officer about 1 p.m. at the train and bus depot on Taylor Street.
The suspect grabbed the pistol and “violently pulled on it, trying to remove it from its holster,” San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros said.
”The security officer was able to retain his weapon and defend himself with his duty knife,” Delimitros said. “The officer suffered minor injuries due to being punched in the face several times.”
The wounded assailant fled to the south.
Police combed the area, eventually finding the alleged attacker bleeding beneath a bridge near the transit center.
The man, whose name was not available, had stab wounds to his torso and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
