Thieves broke into a Sorrento Valley eyeglasses store Friday morning, the latest in a string of burglaries at San Diego-area optometry businesses in the last few weeks.

The break-in was reported around 3:15 a.m. at Designer Eyes Optometry near the intersection of Pacific Heights Boulevard and Barnes Canyon Road, according to San Diego Police.

Officers responded to the scene and found that the front door of the business had been smashed and the thieves had fled, Sgt. Ed Zwibel said.

When officers checked security camera footage they saw four men — wearing hoodies and cloth masks — break the front door with a sledge hammer then begin putting glasses and frames into trash bags before fleeing, Zwibel said.

No detailed suspect descriptions were immediately available.

Three optometry businesses in San Diego County were broken into on the morning of Aug. 8. They were located in the Tierrasanta area of San Diego, Escondido and La Mesa.

Authorities have not disclosed whether they believe the string of break-ins are connected.
