A San Diego patrolman who pointed a gun at his girlfriend’s head and physically assaulted her pleaded guilty Tuesday to a felony charge of assault with a semi-automatic firearm.

Prosecutors plan to ask that San Diego Police Department Officer Timothy Allan Romberger, 40, be sentenced to a year in jail for the Jan. 12 attack, but he could be put on probation.

A nine-year prison sentence will be suspended as a result of his plea, according to prosecutors, who said Romberger pointed a gun at the victim’s head, threw her to the ground, put his hands around her throat and said, “Tell me why you deserve to live.”

An 11-year veteran of the department, Romberger was taken into custody in Santee one day after the assault was reported and was put on leave, SDPD public-affairs Lt. Brent Williams said.

He will remain out of custody on $50,000 bail pending his Aug. 29 sentencing date.
