Investigators sought Tuesday to identify and track down the killer of a 27-year-old man who was gunned down for unknown reasons about a half-mile from Petco Park.

Julius Davis of San Diego was in the 400 block of 17th Street in the East Village when a man in dark clothing walked up to him and shot him shortly after 10:30 p.m. Monday, according to San Diego Police.

The assailant then got into a dark-colored vehicle and drove away, Lt. Anthony Dupree said.

Medics took Davis to a hospital for treatment of wounds to his left bicep and right hip. Though he was admitted in stable condition, his condition worsened overnight, and he was pronounced dead about 7 a.m., Lt. Anthony Dupree said.

The motive for the shooting was unclear.
