Motorists escaped serious injuries despite being involved in a fiery three-vehicle collision Sunday that backed up traffic on Interstate 5 in National City.
The wreck occurred at 12:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes approaching Mile of Cars Way.
According to OnSceneTV, a trailer attached to a white van somehow came undone and collided with a pick-up truck. The contents of the trailer, two jet skis, flew into other lanes due to the impact.
An elderly woman in a sedan then hit the truck, leading to the fire.
The drivers and their passengers were able to leave their vehicles. The California Highway Patrol and the Chula Vista Fire Department responded to the scene.
The male driver of the pick-up sustained cuts to his head, but refused medical care. The elderly driver was responsive, but she was sent to a local hospital for treatment.
The crash led to backups not just on the northbound I-5, but also on the westbound state Route 54 transition.
