A property owner accidentally punctured a gas pipe Friday in a University Heights neighborhood, officials from San Diego Gas & Electric said.
Crews taped off an alley in the 4650 block of Louisiana Street until they could cap the gas line. The owner punctured it with a hand tool just before 4 p.m.
The gas leak, which affected only the property owner, was controlled by about 5:30 p.m., according to SDG&E.
The utility did not order evacuations, but asked neighbors to keep their windows closed.
Before digging, SDG&E asks residents to call 811 for a utility representative to come out and mark where gas lines run on their property.
