Working in coordination with partner agencies, Border Patrol agents arrested 12 people involved in a maritime smuggling event Monday morning.
The event began at around 2:30 a.m., when a Coast Guard cutter encountered a pleasure craft operating without navigation lights 28 nautical miles west of Point Loma.
After intercepting and boarding the vessel, Coast Guard personnel found 12 people, all of whom were suspected of attempting to enter the United States illegally.
The people were escorted to an Air and Marine Operations boat nearby, and then to Ballast Point, where Border Patrol agents took custody.
The group included seven Mexican men between the ages of 21 and 58, one 21-year-old Mexican woman, two Guatemalan men aged 23 and 37, and two Colombian women aged 30 and 42.
Two of the individuals apprehended will face Federal human-smuggling charges.
